LAW and Witness Somalia commemorate 16 days of Activism in Mogadishu

On the 25th November 2019 LAW and Witness Somalia held an event to commemorate 16 Days of Activism in Mogadishu. The day also marked International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the event was well attended by a range of civil society organisations and Federal Government officials.

Panelists included civil society activists and a representative from the Attorney General’s office leading discussions. The lively and wide-ranging debates covered issues relating to the current laws on sexual and gender based violence and how they could be improved, in particular through the enactment of the Sexual Offences Bill which has yet to pass through Parliament.

Participants also reflected on the current trends relating to sexual and gender based violence and the role they and other service providers could play in providing swift and meaningful assistance to victims and survivors.

Mindful that Somalia has yet to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), participants agreed that, although encouraged by the Government’s commitment to ratify CEDAW, they need to continue to advocate for its ratification.
