ABOUT LAW

LAW is an independent, non-profit organisation comprised of human rights lawyers and advisors who provide innovative legal assistance in fragile and conflict-affected areas.  LAW, with the support of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is implementing a first of its kind project, that aims to bring legal support to aid workers victims of acts of violence, and to hold accountable the perpetrators of these crimes. By employing creative legal strategies, the boundaries of impunity can be pushed, sending a strong message to perpetrators that these attacks will not continue unchallenged, resulting in a safer environment for all.

LAW is looking for a consultant to support research on the obstacles preventing aid workers and humanitarian organisations to seek justice for violence committed against them. You can find a more detailed research brief here.

FUNCTIONS/ KEY DELIVERABLES

A detailed research brief is attached to this consultancy description. The Consultant will perform activities in accordance with the deliverables set out below:

  • In close collaboration with LAW, map out the participants to include in the survey, with regards to their roles in humanitarian organisations.
  • Draft the study methodology and design the coding, interview records and any relevant analysis tools and frameworks.
  • Develop the research questions, in close collaboration with LAW project team.
  • Conduct interviews, key informant interviews and focus group discussions in accordance with the methodology agreed upon with LAW project team.
  • Compile and safely store the data obtained.
  • Provide an analysis of the preliminary results by 31 May 2023, and of the full results by November 2023.
  • Support the development of a preliminary presentation of the result by 9 June 2023 and potentially, if appropriate, the drafting of a full report by November 2023.

Advise the LAW project team on the strategy for dissemination of the result as appropriate.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • At least 7 years of experience in gathering statistical and qualitative data in humanitarian contexts;
  • Knowledge of trauma informed approaches.
  • Experience working in an international or major national non-governmental organisations operating in complex environments, preferably in management and field positions.
  • Published work reporting, summarizing or collating empirical research.
  • Experience working in monitoring, evaluation or project learning.
  • Understanding of protection of civilian issues and humanitarian operations constraints in East Africa or another complex operating environment preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and strong technical literacy.
