Media Advisor (Consultant)

LAW is currently looking for a Media Advisor to work on a consultancy framework agreement to support ad hoc assignments, working on projects and deliverables. The Media Advisor will lead and promote the development and implementation of LAWs media strategy, opportunities, approaches, and initiatives to enhance visibility and awareness and of LAW’s work.   

The position

LAW is currently looking for a Media Advisor to work on a consultancy framework agreement to support ad hoc assignments, working on projects and deliverables. The Media Advisor will lead and promote the development and implementation of LAWs media strategy, opportunities, approaches, and initiatives to enhance visibility and awareness and of LAW’s work.   

The Media Advisor is an exciting position and will work closely with our dynamic communications team and in particular with our Executive Director. You will be a self-starter to increase LAW’s engagement with the media, strengthen its connections with relevant persons/fields and ultimately raise the profile and visibility of LAW and its work at the national, regional and international level.  

Background

LAW is an independent, non-profit organisation comprised of human rights lawyers and jurists working in fragile and conflict affected areas in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. We focus on gender equality and sexual and gender-based violence, rule of law and accountability, transformative justice and natural resource exploitation, working to bring justice to those who need it most.  We have represented more than 5,000 victims and survivors of human rights violations and in only 2021, provided more than 27,000 individuals with legal information and assistance. Key information

Reports to: Executive Director 

Duration: Specific assignments will be commissioned under a 12-month Framework Agreement. Flexible, (exact schedules and dates to be discussed and agreed).  

Location:  Based in Geneva or surrounding area and willing to travel to LAW projects when and if required.  

Deliverables/key results expected

The Media Advisor is expected to undertake the following: 

  • Maximise media outreach through identifying opportunities and trends; 
  • Draft high quality content; press releases, op eds, news releases and any other suitable mediums, such as documentary or video about LAW’s work and issues of importance;   
  • Connect to journalists and increase LAW’s engagement on the right tools with the media, focusing on LAWs work and the needs of its clients; 
  • Ensure LAW’s Executive Director and senior staff regularly produce published articles and are quoted frequently in high quality newspapers, magazines and online publications for the general public and relevant industry publications; 
  • Research opportunities for LAW to be featured on TV news, radio broadcasts or podcast series; 
  • Create a yearly media plan and implement it in accordance; 
  • Prepare talking points for high level media events for LAW senior staff/Executive Director as necessary.  

Qualifications/experience

  • Registered as an independent consultant in Switzerland; 
  • Minimum 7 years of demonstrated experience working as a journalist; 
  • Track record and experience covering topics relating to conflicts, human rights and legal issues, the work of international and non-governmental organisations, or related topics is preferred.  
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills in English, a second language will be preferred; 
  • Experiences of working within the INGO sector will be preferred;  
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing and negotiating skills along with the ability to establish positive relationships at all levels and influence outcomes
